Premier League: Liverpool continue title quest with 3-2 win at Norwich

Liverpool continued their march towards the Premier League title with a 3-2 away victory over Norwich City to move five points clear at the top.

Raheem Sterling gave the Reds the lead at Carrow Road with a brilliant strike from outside the box as early as the fourth minute.
The youngster was the architect for the second as he set up Luis Suarez for his 30th goal of the league campaign.
Norwich made it 2-1 in the early minutes of the second half when Gary Hooper found the target, but Sterling's deflected effort just past the hour mark restored Liverpool's two-goal advantage.
Robert Snodgrass pulled a goal back on 77 minutes to make it a nervy end to the match for Liverpool, who held on for their 11th successive win.

Brooklyn teen, 15, shot after cutting Foot Locker line filled with Nike

Isaiah Martinez was shot early Saturday as he tried to buy a pair of Kanye West-designed sneakers from a Brooklyn Foot Locker. Martinez apparently cut the line outside the store, which was filled with eager customers looking to buy Nike Air Foamposite Pro ‘Yeezy’ sneakers.

A Brooklyn teen was shot after cutting a Bushwick Foot Locker line filled with customers looking to buy Nike Foamposite Pro "Yeezy" sneakers.

All he wanted was a new pair of kicks. Instead, a 15-year-old Brooklyn boy got a bullet in his foot.

The victim, identified by friends as Isaiah Martinez, was shot early Saturday as he tried to buy a pair of Kanye West-designed sneakers from a Brooklyn Foot Locker, cops and witnesses said.

Martinez apparently cut a long line of eager customers looking to buy the new Nike Air Foamposite Pro “Yeezy” sneakers moments before the 6 a.m. shooting outside the Knickerbocker Ave. store, near Stanhope St., in Bushwick.

“There were people camped out for the sneakers and Isaiah tried to cut the line,” said Edison Cartagena, 21, who described himself as a Martinez pal.

Those patiently waiting for their chance to buy the $250 sneakers at 8 a.m. were outraged by Martinez’s move and demanded he go to the back of the line, said Cartagena, who works at a nearby clothing store.

“They get into a scuffle and one of the guys on line left and told Isaiah he was coming back with a gun,” Cartagena said. “He came back and just fired off four shots.”

“He probably shot him in the foot just to scare him off,” he said. “You know, send a message.’
Paramedics took the teen to Woodhull Hospital with a nonlife-threatening wound.

“I don’t think anyone should lose their life over a pair of sneakers,” Cartagena said. “Thankfully he’s okay. The whole thing is just crazy.”

Avalanche sweeps down Everest, killing at least 12

An avalanche swept down a climbing route on Mount Everest early Friday, killing at least 12 Nepalese guides and leaving four missing in the deadliest disaster on the world's highest peak. Several more were injured.

The Sherpa guides had gone early in the morning to fix ropes for other climbers when the avalanche hit them at about 6:30 a.m., Nepal Tourism Ministry official Krishna Lamsal said from the base camp where he is monitoring rescue efforts.

An injured survivor told his relatives that the path up the mountain was unstable just before the avalanche. As soon as the avalanche hit, rescuers, guides and climbers rushed to help.

Four survivors were injured badly enough to require airlifting to a hospital in Katmandu. One arrived during the day, and three taken to the foothill town of Lukla could be evacuated Saturday. Others with less serious injuries were being treated at base camp.

Mexico earthquake causes panic but little damage in the capital

MEXICO CITY — A powerful earthquake shook a wide area of Mexico on Friday, terrifying residents and sending many fleeing into the streets.

There were no initial reports of serious injuries or major damage in the capital.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, which occurred about 9:30 a.m., had a preliminary magnitude of 7.2, which would make it one of the stronger temblors registered in Mexico City in several years. It was 14 miles deep and was felt in nine of Mexico's 31 states, in addition to the capital, according to the agency, with the epicenter in the coastal state of Guerrero about 200 miles southwest of the capital.

In Mexico City, buildings, statues and lampposts swayed and windows shattered during the quake, which lasted nearly a full minute. Civil protection authorities said at least 48 buildings had new cracks and that 15 retaining walls had collapsed.

Some residents fled their houses barefoot and carrying pillows. The quake temporarily knocked out electricity, traffic lights and cellphone service in some parts of the capital.
